Clutch Replacement and Service
As cars have developed over the years we have seen many advances such as the use of on-board computers however one of the few components that has stayed much the same is the clutch. In the early days when you put your foot on the clutch pedal, a cable activated the clutch allowing you to change gears. As that often created a “heavy” clutch pedal the engineers went to work and came up with a hydraulic clutch operation. By that I mean when you put your foot on the clutch pedal, fluid pressure assisted the operation of the clutch, making it much easier to use.
The other thing that hasn’t changed is that clutches wear out. There is nothing you can do to prevent that from happening, it’s just a fact that is based on how many times you change gears. “Slipping” is the term given to a worn out clutch and its at this stage you will need to replace your clutch plate. You’ll recognise it when the engine will rev up but the car seems to have no power. When it gets to that point, the life of the clutch will be very limited.
When we renew a clutch at Balgowlah Automotive there are a few steps carried out to make sure the job is 100 %.
- Gearbox drained of oil & removed
- Clutch components removed (Clutch Plate, Pressure Plate & Thrust Bearing)
- Flywheel removed
- Engine rear main oil seal & “spigot” bearing replaced
- Flywheel machined & refitted
- New Clutch components fitted
- Gearbox re-fitted and gearbox oil renewed
The job varies from vehicle to vehicle, depending on access to the gearbox but, it’s generally a job that takes a few hours. The important thing is to do it properly the first time to ensure trouble free motoring. All our Mechanics at Balgowlah Automotive have extensive experience replacing clutch plates and carrying out clutch repairs for all makes and models of vehicles.
